This may sound paranoid, but sometimes, do you ever get a feeling that you are being watched? I don’t mean being watched by people, but by everyday inanimate objects!
If you take a look around sometimes it’s easy to see a face peering back at you from electrical goods, buildings and even cars and there is actually a name for this and it’s called ‘pareidolia’.
Basically, it is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant, a form of apophenia. Common examples include seeing images of animals or faces in clouds, the man in the moon and hearing hidden messages on records when played in reverse.
Why does this happen?
Human beings are “hard-wired” from birth to identify the human face. This allows people to use only minimal details to recognize faces from a distance and in poor visibility but can also lead them to interpret random images or patterns of light and shade as being faces.
Architects and designers are also very aware of this and actually take advantage of it in their creations. To show you exactly what I mean take a look at some of these photos capturing faces on everyday objects.
