It’s a sad fact that the Akira live-action movie was never made, even when Hollywood megastars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Morgan Freeman were linked to the project all those years ago.
Instead we are cruelly treated to yet another Michael Bay Transformers installment and a remake of every classic 80’s movie that didn’t need a reboot in the first place!
Anyway, back in the year of 2009 director Ruairi Robinson was the man attached to direct the still unmade live-action movie. Robinson went to a lot of trouble and had storyboards and quite a lot of awesome concept art created, which you can still see on his website, but the film was never put into production. Damn you Warner Bros!
So, we are going to take a glimpse of what an Akira live-action movie could have looked like. If it was true to the concept artworks and anime then it would have and could have been one stunning looking movie.
Akira is one of my favourite movies and it’s absolutely heartbreaking that all this effort was made, but still no film. Let’s take a look at those pieces of concept art featuring scenes of Neo Tokyo, those awesome motorcycles and see if you can spot Chris Evans as Keneda and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo.
You can see more of the concept art on Ruairi Robinson’s official website.
