Battle of the Haircuts – The 10 Best Mullets in Pop Culture History

The ‘Mullet’, is there anything more cheesy?

You join us here today to witness something rather spectacular. The battle of the mullets!

The name mullet was apparently coined by The Beastie Boys in their 1994 song “Mullet Head”, but previously the term “mullet head” was used to describe a person of dubious intelligence.

The mullet cut was probably first made fashionable in the 1970s by rock stars such as David Bowie and Rod Stewart, but by the 1980s it became the hair of choice for a lot of men in music, movies and sport. Interestingly, the mullet also became popular by the lesbian community and was a way of identifying oneself as a member of that culture in public.

Eventually the mullet boom of the 80s and early 90s quickly burst and the haircut is considered a thing of ridicule. Although, you only have to venture into some places in Europe and the Southern states of the USA to catch a glimpse of the mighty mullet flourishing.

Let’s get the competition on the way. The competition was so fierce we had to extend it to the top 14 best mullets in pop culture history.

14 – Andre Agassi

Maybe that powerful highlighted mullet was just too much for poor old Agassi too handle, because he admitted that he actually wore a toupee way back in the early 1990s. This penalty sees him trailing at no 14!

13 – Michael Jackson

People don’t always think of Michael Jackson when they think of Mullets. It’s kind of like a stealth mullet, but you can see it right there. Jackson does get extra points due to the horrific fire that burned his beloved hair off in the 80s.  It only grew back with more power!

12 – Richard Dean Anderson

What would MacGyver do? We are talking about the original and best MacGyver from the 1980s, Richard Dean Anderson. A mullet to be truly proud of.

11 – Patrick Swayze

You wanna know how the late great Patrick Swayze could kick ass so efficiently in the movie Road House? It was down to that mullet of course.

10 – David Bowie

Bowie had a number of Mullets throughout his career, the most famous being Jareth the Goblin King from Labrynth. Although, it’s obviously fake it is a very magical and mystical mullet. Bowie gets extra credit for the real mullets he had throughout his musical career.

9 – Chuck Norris

The man, the legend that is Chuck Norris. In the 80’s, Chuck Norris wore what stylists referred to as ‘a Fuck-You Mullet’.

8 – Sylvester Stallone

Stallone’s mullet in the Rambo films is a haircut of pure muscle and power. This is a mullet that can send shivers down the spine of your enemy and win wars!

7 – Jean-Claude Van Damme

Van Damme goes in with the perm and grease to get extra points. He also gets extra points because he had this mullet in the 90s, where most of the other mullets in this list pre-date the 90s. That takes pure balls!

6 – Lionel Richie

Having a mullet/afro takes real commitment, so Lionel gets extra points here.

5 – Kiefer Sutherland

We are referring to the character he played in the motion picture The Lost Boys. Who needs 80s highlights when we can go with the bleach blonde mullet?!

4 – Billy Ray Cyrus

Sometimes the mullet is more famous than the person who wears it. I’d say that is definitely the case for Billy Ray Cyrus. Cyrus has had some pretty disastrous haircuts and styles over the decades, but take a look at that magnificence mullet in all its glory.

3 – Michael Bolton

Michael Bolton had got the mullet down to a true art form. I’m pretty sure the song “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” was about his beautiful man mane!

2 – Shawn Michaels

There are so many wrestlers that could have been included in this list. I could have just compiled a list of 10 of the best WWE mullets of all time, but I managed to choose just one… Shawn Michaels.

Michaels really showed off that mullet in the late 80’s and throughout the 90’s. It’s a true powerslam of a haircut and would win him this list if the next guy didn’t exist…

1 – Pat Sharp

A true mullet-meister. Who wouldn’t be proud of this mullet?  If you are reading this from outside the United Kingdom then you most likely won’t know who or what Pat “P Dawg” Sharp is. Sharp is the true zen master of the mullet and is a Radio and children’s TV presenter here in the UK.

Just pause for a moment and check out that mullet. Breath and take it all in. Sharp showed real commitment to his haircut and was still sporting that mullet into the 90s.
